The Project

Saving Buxton Bank is a project undertaken by Buxton in Bloom. Buxton in Bloom is a North Dakota non-profit organization initiated by Bobbi J. Hepper Olson, a local architect and historic preservationist. This non-profit was created specifically to acquire, rehabilitate, preserve, and adaptively utilize the property known as the Buxton Bank. The buildings old Budd Reeve conference room will be utilized as a place to archive old photos and memorabilia from the area and be used as a community conference space. The building will house a history display of the Bank and of the City of Buxton. Ms. Olson also plans to rent part of the building as a branch office for her architectural firm in order to bring income into the project once completed. This joining between public and private sector will create a financially feasible project to save this irreplaceable gem.

This historic preservation project and adaptive re-use will help revitalize the small rural community of Buxton, ND by saving the cornerstone of its main street and utilizing it for office space and community activities. This is the last original storefront from Buxton's 1890's streetscape and its loss would be immeasurable. This building is a local and national landmark and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Since the purchase of the building on March 31, 2005 there has been tremendous community and local support to save this building and we hope to see this enthusiasm blossom. Therefore, the name was derived "Buxton in Bloom."

The construction estimate of almost $200,000 to rehabilitate and adaptively re-use the bank includes:

  1. complete interior and exterior rehabilitation of the 26 foot by 46 foot granite structure,
  2. restoring its original bank teller line and interiors that can be salvaged for restoration, and
  3. a 12 foot by 26 foot addition to house the toilets, mechanical and electrical systems, to allow for the original character of the bank structure to be maintained.
